Kon’nichiwa…Welcome to New People!

Vigours energy circulates through the many floors as Japanese enthusiasts gush in from the streets of Japantown, all exploring bedazzling Japanese culture products.  After sending myself into a tizzy of anime and cosplay indulgence, I catch my breath, remembering what brought me here originally. Meanwhile, on the basement level, still and unmoving, a hidden treasure.  My heart was stirring with intrigue and anticipation. I made my way down the stairs that lead me to a door that would soon expose its keeper.

I step inside a city of lights…a space appropriate for, The Jetsons. This futuristic spaceship was not a spacehip at all rather a metropolitan vision of cinema perfection.

I ask myself, could this truly be a movie theater?

After that, no other question passes through my mind, as I dive in to explore every nook and cranny of this modern space.

143 seats.  Lightsaber-like walls. Orange and Yellow Accents. Cutting edge HD and 35 mm film projection.

I’ve been beamed to first class on a moderate budget. The familiar smell of buttery popcorn is absent and suspiciously unmissed. It seems as if I am the first person to have ever stepped a foot into the theater, but this is untrue. I take a seat directly in the center of the screen ingesting the aura of the theater which releases pure elation. This is the first time I had ever come across a cinema this immaculate.

‘Like a moth to a flame’, you will be attracted by the lights, which represent the city night lights in Tokyo, Japan. The smell of the undefiled air is due in part to the Japanese cinema etiquette, where the filmmaker is expected to have a hold of all your senses. No food or interruptions outside of the film should dare to challenge the artists or their work. The art of cinema is one to be held at the highest level of respect, as it gathers masses in a singular space for cultural enrichment, entertainment, and engagement.

New People Cinema is a timeless theater that truly gives you the cinematic and cultural escape that you don’t know you need until you arrive.

Embarcadero Center Cinema

There are times you don’t realize you’ve been missing something, until you’ve found it. You don’t realize you need something, until you have it. However, if you’re lucky, this ‘thing’, finds you. Instantly your world changes, along with everything you thought you knew.

I followed a white rabbit down Market Street. It galloped through the business crowd, heading to and from the Financial District. My feet lifted off the ground, it felt like I was moving through time. I was pulled through an eclectic mix of modern architecture, of different shapes and sizes. Suddenly the white rabbit vanished, leaving me surrounded by a mass of distinguished concrete.  The walls were made of tall, reflective, glass windows, allowing the sunlight constant admission. The Embarcadero Center Cinema had something to show me and I wanted to see it.

Naturally, I followed the path to an environment, that futurist Arthur C. Clark would approbate. I stood underneath what resembled a vault , lying on its back above my head, engineered with dripping lights, I reached to touch them. This contrasted heavily with its reflection, a floor of modern sophistication and smooth surfaces. Metropolis was reversed, the underground flourished above, while wealth prospered below.

Suddenly, light from a different source, grabbed my attention and whisked me off to a place of bursting colors and bold flavors. Hansel and Gretel, had truly walked in the wrong direction. I faced a nest of cinema delicacies with a gourmet touch: organic beverages, fair trade chocolate bars, several hot food dishes and my favorite, freshly popped kettle corn! I was beginning to sense something special, I knew there was more to discover.

After the touch and taste, of this magical fortress, my sight yearned for an equivalent courtesy. The Embarcadero Center Cinema, obliged readily. With the turn of my heels, I was seated in a palatial auditorium, built for specialty films worthy of Mr. Oscar.  From all points of view, every angle perfected. In addition, the seating was made to match with style and comfort.  No seat was better than the other, every inch, gave a spectacular view of the beautiful, Big Screen.

I had made my way through the auditoriums with captain chair seating, finding it perfectly suited for a girl with a captain hat. A communal experience, in a digitally remastered room, offering constant quality in presentation. It was an overwhelming experience, that called for applause. I felt like the captain of a ship, steering through calm and clean aisles. I used the light on the walls, as a guide to my next destination, which I enthusiastically sought.

As captain, I stood at the helm of the ship and marveled at its structure. As I peered through the window, it all became crystal-clear, my next adventure would take place here. I looked over, to the other side of this cinema wonderland, it was waiting for me to turn the page and jump inside. Perhaps I was half way through this book, no matter, this chapter seemed promising. Perhaps the next auditorium would hold a game of croquet with The Queen of Hearts…maybe better?

Originally, I collected my ticket the traditional way, from the box office, minus the box. A stellar staff member gave me my golden ticket, sending me off with a smile. Now I had the option to reserve my seat. At first, my brain wouldn’t allow itself to rack around the simplicity of this technology.  Before I knew it, my ticket had printed out and I wanted to play again. The idea of choosing my own seat felt like a game, exhilarating and empowering. Always walking off a winner.

It would not be long, before the sun sets. The Financial District would empty its fill of movers and shakers, into the belly of this futuristic multiplex. Further, awakening the beacon of neon lights that sits atop. I took a moment to experience the effects of interior decoration, executed brilliantly.

With the sound of cups filling to the brim, I snapped out of my recluse and joined what sounded like a Mad Tea-Party. However, the tea was local and micro brewed beers, along with a menu of hand picked wines, crowning this cosmopolitan affair.

Pristine, Spacious, Modern and Tasteful.

A few feet away, revealed a new wonder waiting for introduction.  A place to relax and unwind, surrounded by richly saturated reds and golds.  This lounge eases the mind, welcoming guests, to gather, rejoice in art, culture and community.

Elegant, Comfortable, Sophisticated, and Tranquil.

The clock was running, I dashed from the lounge to the auditorium. All drinks and menu items were welcomed, but of course, I opted for popcorn. I thought I had seen it all, again, I sat corrected. As always the best was saved for last. I imagined the proud multiplex spared no expense, in creating my priceless expression. Reclining chairs had made its way from our living rooms to the cinema; only these were covered in leather. A button on the inner armrest replaced the well-known handle. It was like a rocket ship take off, accompanied by professional Seaters, instead of Nasa.  They helped with reserved seating and made unscripted announcements, introducing films eloquently. This raised the quality of the film experience through the roof and to the moon.  Palatial cinema matched by palatial treatment.

I laid back, drifting in the comfort of what felt like home.

A place that never seemed crowded, because of its consideration for comfort and space. A place that had risen from a 90’s beat, transforming through a renaissance beyond expectation. A place for avant garde films and movie goers.

I was drifting from a dream, into another. The sweet and salty clouds, satiated my craving, coupled with leather cushions, cemented my hypnotic state.

Luckily for me, this was no dream, but a reality.

…I lived happily ever after.

Grand Lake Theater

My eyes were closed until they were opened and even then I was dreaming.

It was a roaring time, the energy in the air hovering above, waiting to unleash me from my wrap over coat and cloche hat. I obliged willingly.  With the lift of my T-Bar shoes along with a confident gust of wind fluttering through my accordion pleats, I flapped across the road and laid eyes upon a scene that had neither beginning nor end. Although this was not the film, the picture was utterly stunning.

No words for a moment, just the picture and silence…

Suddenly, the sound of laughter rushed back to me, while the mass of culture raced by and the same uniformed gentleman that ushered me to my golden seat, sent me off.  The jazzy tunes that hug the town, adding a pep to my step, dance me off as a farewell. I find myself underneath the hood of the marquee. One by one, the rainbow of lights recedes into a pot, filled with decades long ago. Goodbye Twenties.

I awaken and stand across the street where this began, I look at the the grandest movie palace with eyes of awe knowing the name is true.

I become Nick Carraway and the Grand Lake Theater is my Jay Gatsby.

I needed a ticket, for admission.

I walked pass the shadow of a box office that once stood outside the doors of the Grand Lake Theater and headed towards the one that passed the test of time with distinction. The glass windows with gold columns were a perfect compliment to the space. Immediately I felt underdressed, stuck between two decades that could only meet in this museum of theaters.  My head spinning in circles, marveled at the magical site of marble pillars, gold balconies and a glittering chandelier that hung proudly above my thoughts.  My enchanted daze was pleasantly disrupted by a smiling face that summoned me to continue my tour beyond the foyer. The personnel service here was impeccable, befitting for the finest ball on either side of the East Egg or West Egg!

The smell of natural, sweet, buttery popcorn gently hugged my nose and slipped me into a state of quick movements and childlike play.  To my left, Tiffany stained glass windows perfectly matching the decor and mood of the space, a multitude of dimmed colors sleeping quietly. To my right, there stood an aisle of  projector relics from the teens and twenties incased in glass that also set the tone.  The sight of black stainless steel and aluminum alloy, brought to mind, factory machines during industrial revolution, due to its aged appearance.

Within the hour I stood on the second floor, proudly inside the Grand Lake Theater. I looked with its eyes through a tall glorious window that revealed guests were arriving for a magical experience. It’s not hard to believe that this palace of film survived the 1989 earthquake, as I look around it is hard to imagine the havoc and damage that it encountered.

A subdued color scheme was ravished after the 1989 earthquake but it allowed light to shine in new colors and designs. The  aura of French renaissance decor, was anchored to the theater like a captain to a sinking ship. However, this theater rose from the quakes ashes with newly installed  glass stained Tiffany windows, green faux marble and wood work.

Surrounded by auditoriums playing movies from different genres. I wanted most of all to sit in the room where the magic all began decades before. It was time to make my way down the grand staircase which is carpeted with fern prints.

The main auditorium that once seated 980 guests was pulsing in red and gold colors.  I had never seen anything like it, I believed that if I planted seeds in the ground below me, surely daisies would sprout and bloom perfectly. Not only would they bloom, they would flourish from the light shining off the movie screen.

The Grand Lake Theater’s highest priority is its guests. To prove that, it removed 360 seats from the main auditorium, allowing more leg room for movie goers to stretch and relax as they would in the comfort of their homes.  Of course this was not enough for the grandest theater in the Bay Area, it wanted to offer more to the movie theater experience.  Only two theaters in this country offered a two-projection 3D system and the Grand Lake Theater is one of them.  Every detail was made to be spectacular.

Spectacular sound and projection, guests service and buttery popcorn!

The Grand Lake Theater is famous for its architecture, interior design, history, political marquee messages. One of the first being ” This is America, every vote should be counted”. It’s known for it’s support of local film festivals: Oakland Film Festival, The East Bay Express Erotic Film Fest, Oakland Underground Film Festival, and 9/11 Truth Evening.

However, what some may not know is that this theater is a Labor of Love and the biggest secret of all is that it continues to live because of a father’s promise to his young son.

The Grand Lake never has to chase the past of fame and wealth, it never has to create a fantasy of glitz and glamour because today it stands for something so much greater. No Daisy in the world can change this. The story is complete.

The Grand Lake has stood the test of time. I’m standing by the doors, waiting for you, to make sure that fact never changes.

Sundance Kabuki Cinema

It was a red carpet event, only with stairs and I stood in the middle of it.  I was surrounded by sun rays that acted as paparazzi flashing light on to every corner, illuminating the unique space with life.

I wasn’t dreaming…it really existed.  Finally after all this time, I received  the chance to meet the one and only, Sundance Kabuki Cinema.

A star in the flesh…the theater everyone wanted to see.  The theater everyone was talking about the night before and the day of.

You were named after an outlaw who made American history with a gang of bank robbers from Butch Cassidy’s Wild Bunch… the Sundance Kid…my curiosity has been peeked!

Pine, Mint, Lime, Shamrock and Pistachio, blend inside of a beautiful tube of life. The bamboo trees made the Sundance Kabuki Cinema’s initial appearance seem exotic. I was engulfed by its distinct rustic details. It was more beautiful than I imagined,  taller with high ceilings and exposed with glass skin. At first sight I was insanely nervous to meet the Sundance Kabuki Cinema but sixty seconds after impact and my curiosity took over.

Whether rehearsing for the next showtime or  simply fog bathing you’ll always find  Sundance Kabuki Cinema, living on the edge of Japantown San Francisco. This is were graffiti laced walls , wide streets and urban culture meet and play.   This is it’s birthplace and continues to be called home. Like every star that shines bright on its path to celebrity…life here shined a different kind of radiance in the 1960s. Like many up and coming artists that start a part time job to support their true passions such as photography or acting, the Sundance Kabuki Cinema started in that same realm.  In 1986 it was a 900 seat restaurant then the community turned it into an auditorium. In the 1970s it played it’s part in the punk rock concert scene and finally got to superstardom in the late 1970’s when AMC theater bought the space and turned it into an 8 screen movie house. Sundance Kabuki  CInema was the Madonna of its time…changing names, interior style and composition but always stayed true to its purpose of being a space for people to enjoy!

With my back gently pressed up against the turquoise blue backdrop and my hands gently holding me up on the silky wood bench.  I noticed my my friends surrounding me in a similar pose.  We as artists all sat there in silence peering deeper into the the life of the Sundance Kabuki Cinema..there was more to discover.  The body of the CInema has always been here but it was Robert Redford, its father, that finally gave it the soul that we embrace every week.  The birth happened in 2006 by the family Sundance Cinemas that created 5 other siblings which exist throughout the country following the same destiny…to show and create art.  Who knew that this film loving family would raise a cinema with such culture, beauty and sophistication, creating a standard for all those around to aspire to be?

There was no need to wait any longer…I purchased my ticket in an advanced and received the best seat in the house right in the heart of the theater through pre-seating selection.   I was ready to dive into the space that many had experienced before but perhaps did not truly grasp.  I was ready to uncover the true passions and purpose of the Sundance Kabuki Cinema.

The pristine white elevator shot me all the way up to the second floor.  I felt like I was in the animated series “The Jetsons”, being brought up through the tube with and amazing view of my surrounding.  I looked out the glass to what I had left down below and it reminded me of the famous slanted streets of San Francisco with cars driving up and down.  Only the streets were stairs and escalators and instead of cars there were people with tickets in hand. Before I could utter the words ” amazing” the doors opened and I found myself home.

The distinct rustic detailing is respectful and tasteful to the Japantown community.  Every detail was well thought out and placed with purpose to the overall design.  Some details were subtle while others were bold and in your face or hanging right above it. The finishes to the theater relate to the the surrounding community and is the same for the siblings of the Sundance Kabuki Cinema.  Each theater shoes respect for the culture it lives in by relating it in their interior decoration.   The bamboo trees and Japanese stye curtains only reside  at this theater making it unique. This celebrity knows how to dress and does it with ease.

It was time to take a break and relax a  bit.  Of course this was easier said than done.  Every where I turned there was more beauty and distinct details to discover.  I walked towards the concession stand and was stopped dead in my tracks by the cool vintage red Coca Cola refrigerator.  I found it refreshing to see and all American piece of furniture in the middle of a modern space with a Japanese spice.  I learned that this theater is extremely environmentally conscious and in no way serves anything that’s not recyclable or compostable.   Everywhere I looked there was a sign that reminded me of that.

I didn’t know what was next to come in this grand palace of film but when it did…I was left speechless.  At that moment I had finally realized Sundance Kabuki Cinema’s purpose…expression.  A long wall of art that reveals the talent of local artist.  It’s a vulnerable moment to be proud of. I stood in front of this wall of still faces, filled with expressions worth a thousand words maybe even more. Yet, my face only uttered one word…”awe”.

You’re father Mr. Redford began laying out the path of your success years ago deep in the cool crisp air of Utah.  He had concocted an idea so simple yet revolutionary in that time and space.  To be unique, free, expressive, emotional, focused, passionate, engaged AND MOST OF ALL RISKY.  This is what the artist would bring to the table for supper under the Sundance Films household.  Mr. Redford would expect no less and the artists would expect no less.

I may not make it to Utah tonight (no can do), I may not make it tomorrow, this week, this month or even this year BUT I will sink in a breath of fresh air, and I will escape the traffic and pressures of city life…life in general right here in the theater. Right here with Sundance Kabuki Cinema…the brightest star on the Red Carpet.

So walk up the stairs and follow the lights into the darkness…

I experienced a “lost weekend” once… and it’s all coming back to me now, so  let me share it with you.

I was doing my usual thing…you know… searching for movies that friends recommended for me to see like “Ichi the Killer” or movies I hadn’t seen in a while but couldn’t find in any library and definitely not in any Red Box.  Yup! The only place I could be was at the Lost Weekend Video in the Mission District.

The selection of movies are out of control but are categorized by genre.  I love to go shopping down the aisles of sweets never thinking about my weight, only my imagination. When I need a moment to relax from all the renting I check out the juke box, play an oldies but goodies song, sit back in a chair and catch up on my film reading.

Then I fire myself back up by popping a coin into an arcade game.  Once I feel my fingers start to blister I’m ready to hit the shelves again.

That’s what I do at the Lost Weekend Video…pretty much just goof around until I’m happily satisfied with my renting selection. There is never any pressure to decide, I can just hangout there all day looking at different movie covers. However on this one day, everything changed, when I met Cine.

Cine isn’t very popular yet.  I didn’t know that…honestly I thought she was cool and different from the rest.  I guess I was looking in from a distance.  She had seen me before and knew of my love for films and the cinema.  She wanted to show me her world…her truth.  It was an honor because she knew more about film than me. I knew I was making a new friend right then and there. Cine had to show me something but it wasn’t in plain sight.  I needed to go where only a few had gone before…I was ready and so I ventured down the stairs and discovered the CineCave.

I felt like I was heading down into a disco horror movie…like Carrie’s prom party (basement style), with silver streamers at my sides.  I was totally digging the dark atmosphere. Suddenly everything went RED and I was taken away into a different world of cinema.

I could never imagine what I discovered…never dreamed…yet there there I was heading fearlessly into the dark cave.

I was lost and found all at once…in a the beauty and individualistic styling of a theater below the city streets.  No one could find Cine or myself, down here.  I was ready to see the rest.

It was no longer a dark horror scene, instead it was a cave of wonders.  The red lights welcomed me with love and warmth. Meanwhile the christmas lights gave me a sense of nostalgia.  Classic movie posters covered the walls and ceiling surrounding  25 slightly worn red cushioned seats (just how I like them). Cine did a great job at decorating her cave. Anything Star Wars is always a plus!

I was ready to hop into a chair or two and get comfy with a movie in my face!  SImilar to the selection up stairs or the array of posters down below…the movies shown on the big screen in the CineCave were from a collection that would inspire me or anyone. The choice would be made by the hearts and minds of the insightful L.W.V family…film lovers.  It would be a movie that was precious to someone or many.  That’s all that really matters.

I got a bit hungry and turned my head to  the mini snack bar and picked up a few essential  items for my movie experience…what’s life without Red Vines.  The answer to that would be Twizzlers but I did not see them, perhaps they were camouflaged under the retro red lamp.  I noticed behind  the counter there were pictures of moments shared, memories captured and saved here in the cave to be seen and not forgotten.  In that moment I realized Cine’s truth…it’s to be seen.  Like every cinema, it wishes to fill its soul with an audience full of suspense and unmanageable eagerness.

Caves usually stand with the words isolated, dark, forbidden, ancient but that’s not true in your case.  Your cave is transparent…you want the community to see what beautiful things you have to share inside.

Me and Cine…we’re “The Goonies” from the Lost Weekend Video.  This is the map to the biggest and most valuable treasure waiting in here in  the CineCave.  Come and join the adventure to save this place.  All you have to do is fill a seat, open your eyes and your heart and enjoy.

The doors are open, all you have to do is step inside…we’re all waiting for you….

Jack London Square Theater

A rainy day won’t stop me from going to visit my dear friend Jack. He has planned for me to meet a very special someone or something.  I wondered what or who it could be. The Mayor of Oakland? The CEO of Regal Entertainment Group? Leonardo DiCaprio in the flesh? Leonardo DiCaprio flavored Twizzlers? While in deep thought, I  put on my green couduroy hat, white Games, Red skirt, and Sista button up…of course the Ray Bans were already on.  Then, I dashed over to find out what special surprise awaited me.

I love being in the Oakland, one of the  most ethically diverse cities in the country.  That’s the only movie I want to play a role in.

I knew I had found my home once I walked into Mr. Regal’s front yard and saw Jack surrounded by a group of friends all waiting to go inside and hang out.  I remember the first time I hung out with Jack,  I practically had him all to myself for two hours .  Jack took me away from reality into a world of entertainment and imagination for five bucks.  It was total bliss…we never looked back.

I walked myself over to the box office thinking…maybe the special surprise is $5 Tuesday is now $4 Tuesday?  Or maybe Jack’s art deco inspired interior and exterior style  is getting a modern makeover?  I really could not figure out what the surprise was.

Finally I gave up and jumped inside.  As always, Jack looked tidy and ready for a night out on the town.  Honestly, I’m happy the surprise wasn’t a makeover because he needs no help in that area.

But who knew that he had help from Sweet ol’ Granny Toni

Even on a busy day I feel like I have Jack all to myself.  His entrance is so welcoming and exposed.  It is filled with light and the buttery smell of freshly popped popcorn.

Jack is just one big space of fun!  Every corner is designated for a special purpose and is titled to guide you. Whether it be customer service , refreshments, critics corner (ice cream stand), or photo booth, it’s all there for our enjoyment.

Before my movie started I found myself prancing around Jack, trying to find ways to pass the time.  So I skipped the line and got something salty and buttery to eat.  I was delightfully surprised that I was not yelled at by the people in line ( who said Oakland is tough?) and on top of getting a great deal on my movie ticket ( better than matinee prices) I also got a coupon to buy popcorn for a few bucks!  Sweet deal…I mean salty!!  Once I had my popcorn in hand I strolled around a bit and eavesdropped on a most pleasant interaction.  It caught me by surprise and lit my whole face up.  It was staring in my direction the whole entire time…the surprise.  I finally found it.  Now all I wanted to do was head back outside and purchase another ticket to experience what I missed the first time around… the warmest, most sincere greeting ever!

There she was.  Toni…in the flesh.  Warming hearts and tearing tickets.

I couldn’t believe I was finally meeting  Jack’s  grandmother!  She was the sweetest person I had ever met if you don’t include children under the age of five which of course don’t count because they’re five and irresistibly adorable and perfect.  Toni had a way of seeming modest which she assured me was not an act.  However, once that ticket reached her desk her cheeks would plump up to her eyelids and her pearly teeth shined.  I chatted with her for hours and I couldn’t keep a straight face.  I was either smiling from ear to ear or laughing down in to my belly.  We talked about everyday stuff and of course girlie dramas like nails and shoes.  I felt like I was hanging out with my own grandmother, safe and warm in a blanket of kindness.

At one point I wondered if people were coming to Jack’s to see a blockbuster hit movie or coming to see a one of a kind ticket usher.  Watching Toni interact with people made my day!  I couldn’t tell which person was receiving more joy from the conversation, Toni or the person she was greeting.

At the end of the day,  I guess it doesn’t really matter who took away more smiles.  What matters is that one was created and that it most likely came from a woman sitting beside the entrance door of Jack London Square Theater waiting to say “hello”.

Thank you for the smile Toni and thank you Jack for everything else.  I’m sliding out now but you know I’ll be back..most likely on $5 Sunday and or $5 Tuesday ( student budget).  Until then enjoy the video I’ve created of my time with Toni at Jack’s.

The New Parkway Theater

Well it seems I may have found a new B.F.F!!!  For those that have said I’m a distant friend and super flaky…well I don’t need you anymore because I’ve got The New Parkway Theater or as I like to call it “Parky”.

Almost there, just a few blocks away.

Yes!  I made it to the boldly colorful, The New Parkway theater.  I’m ready to throw away my stress and chill out with my new buddy.

I had the best time with you…the best time I’ve experienced with a friend in a long time.  It was casual how we met.  Or maybe it was pure serendipity. Yes, I’d like to believe that it was meant to be and complete fate.

Okay I’ll be honest…maybe I stalked you on Cheap SF a little bit.  What do you want from me?! You seemed so cool and fun  to be around.  I had to know more.  So I headed your way to Uptown Oakland and there I saw the sign.  I couldn’t help myself, I needed a moment to breathe before meeting you.

So there I waited on the couch…it seemed clean but turned out to be rather filthy. I didn’t mind the fact that there was a homeless woman sleeping on it before.  Maybe it was because she said ” you look good!”.  My confidence boosted right up and I sprawled myself on top of your couch beneath your graffiti dress.  It was like prom night…I waited patiently for you until I couldn’t wait any longer and dashed right into your arms and found myself.  I was home.

There Parky stood…behind me and I felt the colors consume me. I was read yo discover the true meaning of ” home, sweet home”.

Eclectic, abundant,  artistic, random, welcoming, safe. I found my friend.  Ironically you reminded me so much of the 90’s sitcom “Friends”( Monica’s apartment).  I’ve always wanted to be a character on that show and now I get to be a part of it in real life.  You’re full of textures and layers and colors and light.  I have never known a theater to have so much light bouncing off every object in the space.  We’re so alike.  What’s even better is you’re quite young. You were reincarnated in 2010 (thank goodness) after the funeral of your first life “The Parkway Theater”.  I guess everyone had a hard time saying goodbye to a place where you can come and watch a movie on a big sofa with pizza hanging out of your mouth and beer spilling onto you shirt as you try to consume both.

I hear you were pretty awesome back in the day.  One of a kind and one of the first to have a Speakeasy Theater.  The idea of strangers coming to a place where home doesn’t seem so far away and the people around don’t seem so unfamiliar.  I would’ve fought for you too!

It must not be to hard to make friends when you not only appeal to them visually but also physically.  I’m not talking couches and graffiti.

How about hamburgers, french fries, pizza, quesadillas, mac & cheese, smoothies, wine, beer? Everything! Pack on the calories please, I gladly welcome it.

Or I can go for your gluten free menu, maybe even go hardcore vegan!  You do it all!  What can’t you do Parky? Be anything but amazing?   But the bigger question is why do you do all of this extra work?  Why do you care so much about us…your community?  I thought about it long and hard while dining on my delicious popcorn and realized that you do it because you care.

Maybe that’s why  you have so many friends.  I checked out the guts of your place and saw how much life was in you.  Your friends from the community have decorated you with gifts of appreciation through art. I also saw how you gave right back to them, in cash!  You set aside money from the profit you made on Karma Cinema:  Pay What You Wish Movie Night and helped others in need of assistance to strengthen our community through education or health.

What, are you running for President?  I’d vote for you cheri!

Honestly, Parky,  just sitting with you on a big orange couch with a bowl of popcorn, in front of a big screen, surrounded by new friends, preparing for a moment in fantasy, is the best way to spend my time.  I’m so glad we’ve met.  You really do care about your community and they really care about you.  A place  you can call home is a place where there is love.

Well, well, well, look at you, looking all fine and sexy.  Oh! Is it okay to say that?  I don’t mean to be rude Sexy…I mean Roxie…I mean Ms. Roxie.  What can I say?  You’ve stolen my heart without warning! Not even a hint or a small itsy bitsy idea that you were going to steal my attention from the rest and hold it captive under your marquee. Secretly I must admit…this Brooklyn Sista really likes it here underneath the bold rope lights.  Speaking of Brooklyn I’ll never forget the day I said “peace out” BK and “what’s up”  SF.  I blended right into the colorful Mission District and found myself at your feet. Something about your gritty blue tiles and piercing neon lights got me excited.  Yeah, I’ll admit you were looking a bit on the broken- in side but as I looked closer you were accessorized with quality posters.  I remember seeing the poster Drive featuring Ryan Gosling.  I knew this was no romantic comedy. I realized right then and there, you had seen a lot…rather you had shown a lot.  I wanted you to let me in but I needed to do my homework to impress you. I needed to know what made you special. I had a good idea but I was not prepared for the best parts.

There…Roxie lets me in with a sly smirk…I’m not sure what to expect.

Almost two years later and I’m back, Baby!  I am ready for our date…won’t you let me in? I’m not going to deny I’m a bit on the disgruntled side with you.  Honestly, Roxie, why didn’t you tell me you turned 100 years old in 2009?!  I mean sure I wasn’t around but still you could have informed  me and everyone else of your beautiful age.  Did you think I’d stay away?  Why not display the big 104 on top of the marquee or below it…anywhere.  You’re the oldest thing in town when it comes to theaters and I’m thrilled to know you.  Thrilled and still a bit shocked.  So now tear down that glass wall and let me in, darling, you’ve got some explaining to do….

Roxie…let’s continue on with our date, shall we?  Or should I call you C.H. Brown or maybe The Poppy or maybe The New 16 Street?  Seriously, Roxie!  You weren’t going to tell me that from the year you were born in 1909 your name has changed six times!  What does it feel like to change names so many times but never location?  It’s like you’re changing but you’re still the same.  Weird, don’t you think?  Well, I think Roxie and the Mission District suit you perfectly.  Your name is tough but sexy and spunky.  I love it!

Although, I will say The Poppy does sound pretty swanky.  In my opinion you’re that much cooler for carrying all those names for more than a century.  I do find it funny that even now you have a store front theater named  “Little Roxie” that seats 49  movie lovers. Like two peas in a pod… two names in one is better than none.  While we’re on the subject of names…I never realized calling you Sexy before meant more than it did.  Is there something you would like to express about your past, Roxie?  Reel now or forever hold your peace because I surely am skipping the trailers and jumping right to the climax.

My Sexy Roxie or should I say Promiscuous?  You had some dark moments in your past that I’d like to bring to light if your don’t mind.  Now I’m not talking strong intrusive lights used in a detectives office.  Let’s do it the Roxie way with warm neon lights. So you were a pornography theater back in the sixties. Relax, I’m not judging, the sixties were tough times for many, especially in the Mission District. It’s all just a lot to take in on a first date.   So what was that like for you Roxie?  I can imagine how different those nights were.  XupNOg_FIf2n6mJvz7cZn5RrrZTClwXzKp_QdE_KVIY,4j0WXzRReg1hDkKT5HgYWjemScSHTrwIXlWVS39y1QI

You welcomed strangers into your space who would then be introduced to more strangers receiving a feeling of ecstacy, pleasure, relief, through a screen in a dark room with a light projecting false feelings.  You have seen and shown a lot but most importantly you changed with the community.  You never turned your back on them.  When the Mission District hit a bump in the road, so did you. Your loyalty is pretty tough to match.

Now let’s sweeten up this date and get back into the present.  The past is the past and now I want to who you are today.  What makes you so unique and one of the kind Roxie?

I just love your beating heart.  Smack in the middle of your body a beautiful concession stand waits impatiently for it’s movie lovers to come and bursts open the bags of sweetness.  You make it so hard to make a decision.

Now I don’t know if this is me or just the sugar rush but I think I know what makes you so incredibly special.  I realized how selfless you are.   All you ever do is offer yourself as a space for people to come together and experience art .  Your not afraid to stand up against your audience or for your audience to show them that it’s okay to be different.  It’s okay to not belong in the world of normal, generic, expected and obvious. You’re proud to be who you are and if someone or something has a problem with that…well then they can keep it moving.

I never know what to expect from you! One night your showing an underrated, forbidden, provocative film and then a few hours later your your premiering a film that has been banned for half  a century for offending the Catholic Church!  I wonder if you have Luis Bunuel on speed dial? Oh Roxie, how do you do it night after, night after night?

I should tell you that while you were preparing yourself for your show tonight I received some information from a secret admirer. Now I know it’s not your fault that you’re  so cool  but I don’t know if I can deal with the amount of people that want to be part of you.  Were you ever going to mention Neighborhood Nightz to me? People from the community can submit fils they’ve created  and have a chance to have it shown or your screen in front of an audience.  If the film fits the your standards then they’ve got a shot with you Roxie.  Where does that leave me in your picture?  Maybe we we rushed our love too fast.  You’re priority is to your audience and I completely understand and love you more for it.   We will always have the concession stand and the ticket booth.  Don’t forget me Roxie for I surely will not forget you. This was one unforgettable date.

I’ve created a video of our time together…keep it close to your projector and don’t be a stranger. See you soon Roxie!
